What Size Shop Vac Do I Need?
Shop vacs are sold on tank size and peak horsepower, but neither number tells you much on its own. What actually matters is matching capacity, airflow and water lift to the work you do. Use the calculator below to get a spec band, then read on for how to interpret it.
VacMatch — Shop Vac Size Sizer
Choose your task, space, debris and portability. VacMatch returns a practical capacity and performance band rather than a single product. Peak HP is a marketing rating — airflow (CFM) and water lift describe real-world pickup far better.

Bands follow published general guidance — light-duty 2–6 gal / 1–4.5 peak HP / 60–75 CFM / ~50 in water lift; general-purpose 8–14 gal / 5–6 HP / 75–150 CFM / 65+ in; heavy-duty 16+ gal / 6+ HP / 175+ CFM / ~70–75+ in. Once you have a band, shop within it. Anything that meets the airflow and water-lift targets will handle the job; the gallon figure mostly decides how often you empty the tank.
